In 2020, take-out and fast food helped the restaurant industry survive

Updated: Mar 16, 2023

Takeaway and fast food have helped the restaurant industry survive, according to NPD Group

The sector's activity, which in 2019 represented 57 billion euros in sales in France, contracted by 38% to fall to 35.6 billion euros, with a drop in patronage estimated at 35%.

In this particularly difficult context, fast food restaurants saw an increase in traffic last year, attracting 43% of consumer visits, compared to 36% the previous year.

The only sector to "progress in this weakened market", it gained these 7 points of market share "at the expense of table service, company canteens and leisure and transport catering".

Thanks to the "boost" given by the health crisis, takeaway sales "have doubled their market share", rising from 15% of table-service catering in 2019 to 30% in 2020, and allowing "many establishments to limit their losses", comments Maria Bertoch, sector expert at The NPD Group.
